How To Set Up VoIP

One of the best things about VoIP is that it is simple enough to set up on your own. In most cases, VoIP setup involves plugging in or installing a phone and letting your computer do the rest. The process may be a bit more complicated for local intranets, but most VoIP equipment and subscription packages come with easy-to-follow setup instructions.

To set up a VoIP connection in your home, you need a computer, an Internet connection, a VoIP phone or adapter, and a VoIP service from a service provider.

Computer

Technically, any computer can be wired to a VoIP connection, but other components of a VoIP system, such as the VoIP phone and adapter, can work only with certain operating systems or processors. Specifications can usually be found on the package – check all of your equipment for compatibility before setting up your VoIP network.

Internet connection

Broadband or DSL connections are ideal for VoIP, although there is nothing stopping you from setting up VoIP on a dialup. Dialup connections, however, are largely dependent on your phone line, making them prone to interruptions and interference. Problems with your phone line will affect your VoIP connection, which defeats the purpose. Most Internet providers offer VoIP-enabled broadband connections.

VoIP phone

You have three options for a VoIP phone: an adapter that enables your old phone to transmit VoIP data, an external phone that connects to your router, and a virtual phone program. Analog telephone adapters (ATA) are plugged into your phone and computer, converting the analog signals from your phone into digital data that can be chopped into packets and sent over the Internet.

External VoIP phones look like regular phones, except that they plug into your router via an RJ45 cable rather than the RJ11 one used in landline phones. They work much like traditional phones, with the ATA built in.

If you do not want to be bothered by hardware and maintenance, you can download a virtual VoIP phone (commonly called a softphone) from the Internet and install it  into your computer. These programs have the interface of an actual VoIP phone, plus some additional features like instant messaging and conversation archiving. Most programs are free, with an option to upgrade to a paid account to enjoy exclusive features.

VoIP service

You will need to establish an account with a service provider in your area. Most providers offer a range of subscription types for local and international calls. For a fixed monthly fee, you get unlimited talk time to and from the areas covered by your subscription.

Computer-to-computer calls do not require a VoIP service, relying entirely on your Internet connection. However, such calls can only be made when both parties are logged on to their softphone accounts.
