Most of the available software for VoIP systems are computer programs designed to imitate and function like actual VoIP phones. Commonly called softphones, these programs have an interface similar to that of a VoIP phone, with a keypad dial and a display screen, often with additional web-exclusive features. Softphones are a popular alternative to hardware VoIP phones because they eliminate the need to maintain hardware and reduce the clutter of cables and wires. Many providers offer free downloadable softphones, which allow you to make basic computer-to-computer calls. Usually, such programs have an upgrade version which you can buy online. Upgrade versions have additional features and services, such as mobile messaging, personalized callback messages, and a larger call history and archive storage. Types Computer-to-computer
Basic VoIP software allows calls to be made from one computer to another, bypassing the telephone line altogether. In such a setup, the quality and speed of the connection depends entirely on the Internet connection, so these programs work best with a high-speed broadband or DSL connection. One drawback of computer-to-computer services is that they require both parties to be logged on to the program for a call to be made. Usually, the two parties arrange a call beforehand and log on at the set time. Most computer-to-computer services are offered in trial or freeware versions of VoIP software. Computer-to-phone Some programs can call a VoIP or analog phone from your computer, allowing you to reach other people without having them log on to the program. Analog phones need not be connected to an ATA, since the program converts the signal prior to transmission. Computer-to-phone services are rarely offered for free; they usually come with premium or pro versions. Conferencing software VoIP conferencing software supports conference calls of up to 60 members. VoIP conferencing is a fairly new concept, and there are limited options for compatible conferencing programs. VoIP conferencing programs are mostly available online and cost a bit more than other VoIP software. Also, most VoIP conferencing programs have heavy system requirements and will work only on certain processor speeds, memory capacities, and operating system versions. Some features to look for Security VoIP programs are more vulnerable to hackers and eavesdroppers than hardware VoIP phones. Look for programs with advanced security features, preferably one that does not bypass your firewall. Upgrade options New technologies are rolled out every day, and your softphone can become obsolete before you know it. Before buying a VoIP program, check the company website to see how often they upgrade. Also, make sure your program has an auto-update feature, so that it can detect and install new upgrades as soon as they become available. |
