As high-speed and broadband internet connections are becoming more prevalent in houses across the U.S.A, citizens are asking themselves can voice over ip calling save me cash on my phone debt? To answer this question you need to take a further look at voice over IP calling and the expenses associated with switching to voice over IP. If you don't know how VOIP works, then read on. When you make a voice over ip call it works by converting the voice signal from the phone or handset into a digital signal and sending it back over the internet. The original digital signal is then converted back into a voice signal (or digital /anaglogue voice signal) and comes out of your headset or earpiece (or even a voip softphone) on their side. By transferring the signal over the internet it doesnt matter how far it has to go, a call across the street costs the same as call across the country. For people who have phone bills that are over 40 dollars, voice over ip calling may be able to save you money on your phone bill... When comparing voice over ip companies you should have an idea of the amount of calls you make a month.. The best thing to do is investigate your phone bill for the past three months and figure out how many minutes you are using. If you are using less than minutes a month you will find voice over ip calling plans that are probably much less than your regular phone bill. If you are using over minutes each month you will probably find unlimited call plans might be more cost effective in the long run. If you make a stack of OS phone calls, check to see if international calls are included in the plans you are considering. Voice over ip Equipment and Getting started Some voice over ip services will ask that you update your current telephone or equipment. Nearly all voip services will require you to purchasea voip router. It connects your broadband internet access to your voip phone system. Some Voip routers only interface with newer voice over ip phones, meaning you will have to buy new equipment and or a new broadband or ADSL modem. This really becomes an important factor if you have more than one telephone in your house. Actually, there are a few different ways you can get started with voice over ip. The method above is probably the most popular. I use this way myself and most of the residential providers out there today use this as well. However, there are few other ways you can connect with voice over ip: PC to PC Connections This is the oldest and possibly the easiest way to get plugged into voice over ip. As the name would suggest, instead of using your regular home telephone or IP phone to make calls through your broad band connection, you use your computer itself (If your a sucker for pain you could do this over dial-up, but broad band is certainly better). There are a number of services, for instance, skype.com that offer a no cost services where you can talk for free with an existing connection. To get started you'll need the software (or client) and a microphone to speak into, and headphones (or speakers) and of course your computer and a high-speed internet connection. Some voip providers offer this service for free when their software can only be used by people running the same platform. IP Phone Internet Protocol Phones As the name might imply, these are special phones. You wouldn't know it just by looking at them. What is different about Internet Protocol phones is the electronics inside them and the fact they don't plug into a regular phone - an RJ-11connection. Instead Internet Protocol phones plug into an Ethernet cable connection (RJ-45) and also come equipped with the required electronics to plug straight into your router.
