How To Know Which VoIP Service Is Right For You?

As high speed and broadband internet connections are becoming more extensive in houses across the United States, people are asking themselves can voice over IP calling save me hard cash on my phone bill? To answer this query you should probably take a deeper look at voice over IP calling and the expenses associated with changing to VOIP.

If you don't know how VOIP works, then read on. When you place a voice over IP call it works by converting the voice signal from the phone or handset into a digital signal and sending it back over the internet. The original digital signal is then converted back into a voice signal and comes out of the headpiece (earpiece) on the other side. By transferring the signal over the internet it doesnt matter how far it has to go, a call to your neighbour will cost the same as call to another country. For people who have telephone bills that are over 30 dollars, voice over IP calling may be able to save you money on your phone bill...

When evaluating voice over IP companies you should have an idea of the amount of calls you make a month.. Probably the best thing you can do is take a glance at your phone bill for the last quarter year and figure out how many minutes you are using. If you making more then 6 hours of calls a month you will find voice over IP calling plans that are probably much less than your montly phone bill. If you if you use over 50 hours a quarter youll probably find unlimited call plans might be more cost effective in the long run. If you make a stack of OS phone calls, check to see if international calls are included in the plans you are evaluating.

voice over IP Equipment and Choosing the right service

Some voice over IP services require that you update your phone and/or modem. The key to the VOIP system is VOIP router. The router will connect directly to your existing internet/modem and give you access to your new phone system. A lot of new routers only interface more recent voice over IP phones, meaning that will have to buy new equipment and or a new broadband or ADSL modem. Equipment requirements like this become an important consideration if you have more than one phone.

Actually, there are a couple of different ways you can get started with voice over IP. The method above is probably the most popular. I use this way myself and a lot of the residential and business providers out there today use this as well. However, there are few other ways you can connect with voice over IP:

Computer to Computer VOIP

This is the oldest and possibly the most hassle free way to get plugged into voice over IP. As the name would suggest, instead of using your normal phone or IP phone to make calls through your broadband connection, you use your computer itself (You could do this over dial-up, but broad band is certainly better). There are a number of services available that offer no cost or low cost service. To chat over you exising internet connection in this way you'll need a microphone to speak into, and speakers and of course your computer and a broad band internet connection. A lot of PC to PC voip service providers offer this service for free when their software is being used by 2 or more people - yep you can even do voip conference calls in this manner.

IP Phone Internet Protocol Phones

As the heading might suggest, these are different to your regular telephone. You wouldn't know it just by looking at them. What is different about Internet Protocol phones is the electronics inside them and the fact they dont take a regular phone - an RJ-11connection. Instead these phones plug into an Ethernet cable connection (RJ-45) and are also equipped with the necessary electronics to plug directly into modem/router.
