VoIP in the UK has now become a flattering viable option for home users and small businesses, wherein a small business or home user could consider completely replacing their telephone with a VoIP phone. But VoIP services that interface with the PSTN phone network to allow you to make and receive phone calls from anyone with a telephone have started to make that a real alternative. gradwell is dedicated in allowing users to make phone calls over the Internet. Generally any user wishing to communicate through Internet opting for least complication, it is done through proprietary messaging system such as MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Netmeeting AIM's Voice Chat or SkyPe. All the listed services offer free software and connectivity and they use their own proprietary systems to allow you to make voice calls to other people using the same service. All these services are designed for immature users, so it's a easy to set up, and voice quality is acceptable. But the main drawback is that users can communicate with the users of the same service. And finding a service of this kind that supports Linux, Unix or RiscOS can be tricky (some don't even support the Mac.) Any user opting for gradwell should have a broadband connection, and as the sound is digitized, you should usually find that sound quality is better than that provided by an old analog phone. It's important to make sure you are using the correct codec to compress the voice data if you are using a lower bandwidth line. G729a or GSM are codecs recommended for dialup and ISDN use. an internet connection, an account with a VoIP service provider (or voice messaging service) ,a software phone program (or messaging software) ,a microphone and headphones (preferable to speakers, which produce feedback and echoes.) other alternative could be an IP phone that connects to an Ethernet port on your hub or router else a VoIP adaptor that allows you to connect an ordinary phone to an Ethernet port on your hub or router. You can of course use a software phone as well as your IP phone or phone and adaptor if you like. To make or receive a VoIP phone call, your phone or softphone must be connected to the Internet. If you are offline, no-one can call you. A user might dial an ordinary phone number, or use a shorter number to dial someone using the same VoIP service provider direct. As you do so, software running on your computer, phone, or phone converter box sends a message that says first that a call is beginning, then the number dialed.Once the user at the other end picks up, you speak into a microphone (either on your pc, or in a phone) and subsequently speaker's voice is converted to a digital signal, and an algorithm called a codec is used to compress the data so less bandwidth is needed for the call. The data is separated into packets, and sent instantly over your Internet connection. If the person you are calling is also using Internet telephony the packets are sent over the net to them, (or to their PBX, if they have a local phone network with a VoIP exchange). As the packets arrive, similar software reassembles the packets, decompresses them into sound, and plays it. (This takes a long time to describe, but no observable time at all to actually work.) Gradwell provides its users the flexibility of the allocating the new phone number, depending on the type of service user opts for. Internet-only voice calls services, usually just identify you through a username and password. Services that can connect to the PSTN network to make phone calls to non-VoIP phones will usually issue you with a 05 or 07 personal number. Gradwell will not work if power goes out as generally what is understood is that our ordinary phone doesn't need a separate power connection, but as VoIP relies on your internet connection, if your broadband router, modem or ISDN box has no power, your phone won't work either. If the user has decided on an internet-only service, then he can only call other Internet-based users - there's no way to phone a normal phone number. But if you have a PSTN gateway service, eg BT Broadband Voice, you can phone most phone numbers. The big exception is the emergency services. You can't call 999 on a VoIP phone at present, so in an emergency you'd need to also have a mobile or landline. Gradwell charges depending on how your VoIP provider is set up, it may monitor the length of your call to the PSTN and debit your charge card for the time you've used up, or you may be paying a flat monthly fee for access to the PSTN gateway. If your call was IP-0nly (not to an ordinary phone number) you won't normally be charged for it at all. |
